A program on a mission to eliminate deep infant poverty by giving cash payments to pregnant moms and babies in Flint is expected to expand to cities across Michigan. Rx Kids, regarded by officials as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, provides moms with $1,500 mid-pregnancy for essentials like food, prenatal care, cribs or other needs. Then, after birth, families get $500 a month for the first year of the infant’s life, for $7,500 in total. The no-strings attached program, which does not have income restrictions for eligibility, launched in January.

Over a third of U.S. states have detected the West Nile virus so far this year, as mosquito-transmitted diseases continue to grow their presence in the country. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — In Lansing, Michigan lawmakers last week passed a potential ban on the use of what is often referred to as the "LGBTQ panic defense." Per House Bill 4718, the discovery, knowledge or disclosure of a victim's "real or perceived sex, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation" will no longer be admissible in state court in a defendant's effort to claim and prove reasonable provocation or reduced mental capacity.

SUMMER in Paris, a Leading Families Home annual event, on June 20 at Inverness Club raised $48,885 including more than $18,000 from the "Gifts from the Heart" auction. This auction helped fund the emergency family shelters, behavioral health services, and housing programs for families facing homelessness in Lucas County. Leading Families Home started in 1921 as Beach House Family Shelter for mothers with children and single women facing homelessness. In 2016, Beach House Inc. merged with F.O.C.U.S. to create Leading Families Home. Accordionist Eric Hite played tunes during the cocktail hour as guests sipped sparkling Francois Montand Brut and nibbled on hors d'oeuvres while shopping the silent auction.
