WESTPORT — Looking for something to do this week? You won't have to travel far. There's a nearby field filled with family-friendly fun as the Westport Fair is officially underway.

The Westport Fair, a SouthCoast staple now in its 69th year, is an annual celebration of rural life that offers something for everyone to enjoy.

The five-day event kicked off Wednesday, and continues through Sunday, July 21, featuring a schedule jam-packed with farm fun, food, carnival rides and the return of some beloved racing pigs.

Here's a quick look at what to know before you go:

When and where is it taking place?

The Westport Fair resumes tonight through Sunday, July 21, at 200 Pine Hill Road, Westport.

Wednesday to Friday, main gates and carnival gates open at 6 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. On Saturday, main gates open at 11 a.m. and carnival gates open at noon. On Sunday, main gates open at 8:30 a.m. and carnival gates open at noon.

    What can we expect there?

Westport Fair has a little bit of everything — for the foodies, the farmers, animal lovers, the gardeners, the crafty and the thrill seekers.

There you'll find antique and livestock exhibits, an animal tent, carnival rides, chainsaw sculptors, children's activities such as arts and crafts and a magic show, as well as an array of tasty local fare and live entertainment.

For those who love a little competition, the fair will feature a horseshoe tournament, tractor pull events for kids and adults; egg, vegetables, flower arrangements, canning and preserves contest; baked good contest; pet photo contest; and an appearance from Robinson's Racing Pigs and Paddling Porkers.

Their annual Chicken Barbecue is slated for Saturday, July 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets ($15 for adults and $8 for children) must be purchased in advance at the Craft Building.

Is there a cost for admission?

Yes. Daily admission is $5, and children under 12 are free. Cash only is accepted at the gates of entry.

Carnival rides require tickets that are purchased separately. Ride ticket prices are $1.50 per ticket, 25 tickets for $25 or 40 tickets for $35 (rides take 3, 4 or 5 tickets each). Visit the Rockwell Amusements website for more carnival information.

    History of the Westport Fair

The long-running town tradition was first held at Westport High School in 1955. According to its website, the purpose of the fair was to promote agriculture in the town and to show projects that the vocational students had completed. Over time, it became "the social event of the summer." The fair was moved to its current home on Pine Hill Road in 1984.
