ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) — New tenants will soon be moving into 41 apartments in downtown Elmira after a ribbon-cutting ceremony announced the first building’s completion on Thursday afternoon.

A group of people from the City of Elmira, the Chamber of Commerce, Arbor Housing and Development, and more stood on the steps of 406 E. Church St. for the opening of the first of four newly renovated apartment buildings.

The Reynold’s Way Apartment project is designed to be affordable housing for lower-income families and individuals while having walking access to everything in the downtown area.

President and CEO of Arbor Housing, Susan Bull, explained her excitement on Thursday about the opening of the apartments and the people who will be helped by it.

“So we’re super excited to be here today,” said Bull, “to cut this ribbon, on this property which will be the first open property of the four-building development here that will house 41 apartments for citizens who are living right here in our own community to have a safe affordable place to live,” she said.

The buildings have been renovated to include much of the antique architecture, like original flooring, fireplaces, and built-in shelving from when the buildings were constructed while including new appliances, windows, doors, and balconies to several units.

Tenants are expected as early as next week, April 1, with the other buildings following shortly after.

18 News first heard of the project in 2021 with construction beginning shortly after. Original completion was predicted for 2023 but got pushed back several months.
