ATHENS, Pa. ( WETM ) — The four-year-long Route 199 roadwork project is continuing in Athens this week, so motorists can expect more detours and delays.

According to PennDOT, crews will continue working on Route 199 between Pine Street and Vanderbilt Street by paving the base and binder of the northbound lane during the week of Monday, May 13. Additional construction in the area may include drainage improvements, utility relocations, sidewalk and curb improvements, ADA-compliant curb ramp installations, traffic signal upgrades, driveway adjustments, and signing and pavement markings.

Motorists driving through the area are advised to use extreme caution because heavy machinery and tri-axles will be entering and exiting the work zone.

Most southbound vehicles will be able to drive through the work zone while northbound vehicles and tractor-trailers going in either direction will need to take detours. Northbound vehicles can take a 0.66-mile-long detour using East Pine Street, Wells Avenue, and East Frederick Street, and trucks will need to take a 7.7-mile-long detour that uses Route 220 and Interstate 17.
