WAVERLY, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Village of Waverly Waste Water Treatment Plant will be conducting a test to check for leaks in its sanitary sewer system this week.

According to the Village of Waverly , the Waste Water Treatment Plant will be looking for areas where ground and surface water are entering the Sanitary Sewer System starting on Tuesday, May 14. The testing, which is anticipated to take two days, is expected to help reduce sanitary sewer overflow volumes and reduce the Waste Water Treatment Facility’s operating costs.

Personnel from the plant will conduct the testing by introducing non-toxic smoke into specific manholes located on the streets and observing the streets and homes for smoke exiting storm sewers, roof gutters, and other areas that may be connected to the sanitary sewer system. The smoke used for the testing is manufactured specifically for these tests, is not harmful to animals or plants, and leaves no residual odor or stains. The smoke does have a distinct temporary odor, but the village says that it isn’t unpleasant.

The smoke and its odor should dissipate after a few minutes in areas with adequate ventilation. The smoke should not enter buildings or homes unless they have defective plumbing or drains that are used infrequently. The village recommends pouring or running water down all drains and making sure all drain traps are filled and working a few days prior to the testing to make sure smoke does not enter your home or building.
