    Tire collection event coming up in Chemung County

    HORSEHEADS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Chemung County residents who have old car tires will have the chance to get rid of them soon.

    The Chemung County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Chemung County Highway Association are holding a tire collection day at 851 Chemung St. in Horseheads on Saturday, June 1. This event is only for Chemung County residents, and participants must register in advance. Businesses cannot participate in this disposal event.

    Only car and truck tires will be accepted; tractor and dump truck tires will not be accepted. All tires taken to the event must be free of mud and debris, but they will be accepted with or without rims. Each person can bring no more than 25 tires for disposal and will need to pay a fee of $4 per tire.

    Those who would like to dispose of tires at this event will need to call 607-739-2009 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday to register. Participants will need to give the number of tires they plan to dispose of while registering. Each person will be given a time slot between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. of when they should arrive at the disposal location.

    All interested residents must register before Wednesday, May 29, however, registration will close earlier if the total number of tires registered reaches 1,200.
