North Hornell Police receive grants for equipment

NORTH HORNELL, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Village of North Hornell Police Department announced that it received grants for new equipment and upgrades.

The police department got a total of about $129,000 from three separate tax-funded grants in 2024. One of the grants was from a previously announced New York State Law Enforcement Technology Grant, and the others were from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program. The North Hornell Police broke down how they’ll be spending all of the funds they got this year.

In April, the police department secured $59,800 from the state technology grant. The department plans to use these funds to pay off equipment lease contracts and purchase new computers and radio equipment. Updating the outdated computers and radios is expected to keep the officers and community more safe and secure.

The North Hornell Police got its first Justice Assistance Grant in February. This nearly $14,000 federal grant was used to help buy and upgrade radio equipment for the police department and school resource officer. The almost $55,000 grant the department received in June will be used to buy a new fully outfitted marked patrol vehicle for the school resource officer. The current vehicle the department is replacing is almost 20 years old.

The Village of North Hornell and the North Hornell Police Department say they plan to continue looking for and using grant opportunities to help save taxpayer money.
