Horseheads Historical Society debuts successful sports exhibit

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – The Horseheads Historical Society held a special first-time event Friday night.

The venue debuted a brand new exhibit dedicated to Horseheads Little League Baseball and Horseheads sports. A strong turnout attended the first viewing at the historical society located on 312 West Broad Street in Horseheads.

Dozens of Horseheads sports memorabilia, vintage articles and more were on display for sports enthusiasts who walked through the doors. The display will be featured for several weeks after Friday’s debut.

In attendance was special guest Christina Kowalski, a legendary standout in softball at Horseheads and St. Joseph’s University. Christina discussed the emotion of seeing so many memories come back to life.

“I’m so fortunate to be from Horseheads, a community that cares so much about their sports and their history,” Kowalski said. “To have it all in one spot, to look at everyone and the familiar faces and to read the stories, it really brings back a lot of good times of my life.”

Another Kowalski, the iconic Ed Kowalski, was also in attendance for the exhibit. Ed played in the early days of Horseheads Little League back in 1954 and then starred at Horseheads High School. He says the league and area has provided so many special moments that will never be forgotten.

“Little League Baseball here, obviously through the years, it’s given the youngsters a place to go and play ball and get together,” Ed said. “There’s been some good teams, some good records and there’s been some good history here in the Horseheads area.”
