MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Village of Montour Falls as part of a New York State Energy Research & Development Authority Clean Energy Community was awarded nearly $200,000 in grant funding to help save the village money with clean energy programs.

According to a release from the village clerk, $175,000 in taxpayer grant funding was awarded to the village in July and will be used to help the community save money through energy improvements to the village’s water system.

The grant money received this year will go toward purchasing an electric truck for the water department and constructing a 100kV solar array to power the electric pumps used by the village’s water system. The release states that these measures will help save taxpayers around $750,000 over the next 25 years.

In the six years that the village has been an NYSERDA Clean Energy Community $412,000 has been granted to upgrade and improve things like LED streetlights, municipal electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, municipal building upgrades, community clean energy campaigns, and so much more.

Village Mayor Jim Ryan expressed how the village is always trying to find ways to help residents save money by reducing municipal energy usage.

“It is my goal to reduce our municipal energy usage by investing our grant dollars toward high-return projects,” Ryan said, “reducing both costs and greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Ryan said the solar array is an efficient solution to not only lower energy costs but also clear a path for a more inclusive green economy for everyone.
