Corning football primed for new season

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – Corning football is ready for a return to the gridiron.

The Corning Hawks football program will be looking for a return to glory in 2024. This past season, the Hawks’ hopes of a 4th-straight Section IV championships were snapped by their rival Elmira. Since the postseason setback, Corning is more motivated than ever to return to the top of the league.

“This year, we’re not taking anything for granted, said senior quarterback Ian Harpster. Over the last couple years we expected to win championships and that doesn’t change this year, but we don’t have that title. We’ve got to go back and earn it.”

Among those looking to earn the Section IV Class AA crown back, are several key returners. Joining Harpster on a skilled returning offense are names like Brenden Jardin-Reed, Clayton Smith, James Freeman, and Carter Sparks. The core of upperclassmen will be looking to lead a roster, consisting of young talent.

“We have some new faces and some kids with a little bit of experience, who are leading the way right now, said Head Coach Mike Johnston. That’s what we are looking for. I’ve never named a captain in any of my years coaching because the cream rises to the top. We are looking for people that are leaders.”

Corning opens their season on Friday, September 13th at 7 p.m. when they host Edison Tech, out of Rochester. A full schedule is listed below and make sure to watch the 18 Sports Blitz Friday night’s at 11 all season long.
