DANSVILLE, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The American Red Cross’s first-ever chapter reopened in Dansville on Saturday after undergoing renovations.

American Red Cross Founder Clara Barton established the organization’s first chapter at 57 Elizabeth St. in Dansville on Aug. 22, 1881. The building where Barton started the American chapter of the International Red Cross still hosts volunteers and staff 143 years later and acts as a Red Cross history museum.

According to the American Red Cross of Western New York, American Red Cross Clara Barton Chapter #1 was closed while it underwent renovations to help preserve it for future generations to enjoy. Renovations to this Elizabeth Street house, which was built around 1840, included UV film installation to protect the interior, electrical and security upgrades, structural repairs, foundation pointing, exterior wall repair, full window restoration, and original hardwood floor repairs. The walls in the parlor, dining room, library, and second-floor conference room were repaired and repainted as well. The American Red Cross’s first chapter reopened on Aug. 24, 2024, after the renovations were complete.

People interested in visiting the birthplace of the American Red Cross must request an appointment for a free tour and can do so through the American Red Cross’s website . Visitors will get to see original artifacts from Clara Barton, the Civil War, and dignitaries who visited the site. Barton’s personal letters with contemporary leaders from the area like Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are on display at the museum.
