Horseheads fishermen win state crowns at Bassmaster Classic

SYRACUSE (WETM) – Some talented fishermen brought home top honors in the state this past week.

Four area Horseheads fisherman earned first place in the annual Bassmaster NY State Junior & High School Classic event held at Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. In the high school division, Beckett Kraft and Grant Edwards won for Horseheads High School with a winning combined weight of 23.34 pounds anchored by a 5.29 largemouth bass. This was the largest-winning weight in Bassmaster NYS Fair Classic history.

In the junior division, the team of Horseheads Middle School’s Sullivan Kraft and Jude Pfiefer won their group with a total combined weight of 19.53 pounds which was anchored by a 4.46 largemouth bass.

With their overall wins, each team has now earned the shot to compete at the Bassmaster Junior and High School National Championships next year. Last year’s event was held on Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee.

Beckett and Sullivan Kraft are both three-time New York State Champions and have now qualified for the national event four times in their already standout careers. A total of 21 teams spread out in both divisions competed from all over the state of New York in the event.
