(WIVT/WBGH) – A 5-year-old boy from Buffalo set what is expected to be a state fishing record over the weekend.

Gregory Martin caught a pumpkinseed fish weighing 1 pound 15 ounces while fishing with his family on Oneida Lake late Saturday morning.

Martin was fishing on a boat belonging to his aunt Hope Pragacz of Binghamton.

Pragacz says he caught the sunfish with a hook and worm and a drop shot sinker. She says it lost an ounce of weight in transport to a certified scale, but 1 pound 14 ounces is still five ounces more than the current record of 1 pound 9 ounces that was originally set in 1994 and tied in 2020.

Pragacz says she is waiting for the DEC to come and certify the catch to make it official.
