    Tioga County, NY, deaths ruled murder-suicide

    TOWN OF TIOGA, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After two people were found dead in a Town of Tioga residence on Monday, investigators say their deaths are the result of a murder-suicide.

    The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that the two individuals found at 32 Weiss Road on Aug. 27 died from apparent gunshot wounds.

    Road Patrol deputies and members of the Criminal Investigation Division determined that 44-year-old Janice Shumway was shot and killed by her husband 46-year-old Michael Shumway Jr. in the early morning hours of August 26. Michael Shumway then took his own life via a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police and the Tioga County Coroner’s
    Office.
