Elmira football has sights set on another strong season

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Elmira football is primed for another big year.

Fresh off of their first Section IV Class AA title since 2018, the Elmira Express are excited to be back on the gridiron. Leaving their Section IV title in 2023, the Express are back with another physical group. Despite losing 8 seniors, including star quarterback Evan Garvin, and standout wide receiver Johnnie Garcia, Elmira is returning a large roster with plenty of experience.

The dedicated group has been working since February, filling roster spots with nearly 20 seniors, and several young players who saw action in 2023. Head Coach Jimmy McCauley is happy with the turnout for the team and is hoping to get the most out of his student-athletes.

“We had our best numbers, starting in February with our weight lifting program, said McCauley. It was a great summer too. We had about 40 or 50 kids for our summer lifting, running, and installs. With all of the injuries last season, we had some kids step in and get some minutes as young players. We’re really going to expect them to come every day with some leadership and right now we’re trying to get even more out of them.”

Elmira opens their season on Friday, September 13th at 6 p.m. when they host St. Peter’s High School, out of Staten Island. A full schedule is listed below and make sure to watch the 18 Sports Blitz Friday night’s at 11 all season long.
