ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New York State is taking steps to make roads safer and ease traffic congestion for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The state is cracking down on impaired and reckless driving from Friday through Monday. Drivers can expect to see more NYSP patrols than usual, along with sobriety checkpoints. Troopers will be out in marked and unmarked vehicles.

On Labor Day weekend last year, police arrested 988 people for DWI and issued 28,856 traffic tickets.

“We want all New Yorkers to wrap up the summer by enjoying Labor Day weekend and making memories,” Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement issued Friday. “Avoiding crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities is simple; stay sober, stay alert, and obey the speed limit.”

To ease holiday traffic, New York State is also suspending all temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers and emergency repairs will take place as needed.
