Troy football topples Dover in out of state clash, Canton outlasts South Williamsport

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Troy and Canton football each improved to (2-0) on the season.

Troy and Canton football each delivered impressive road wins, on Saturday. The Warriors defeated South Williamsport 17-8, in a rare 10 a.m. matchup. Canton’s Ben Fitch connected with Zach Colton, for the games 1st score in the 2nd quarter. The Warriors extended their lead in the 2nd half, on a 22-yard field goal from Alexis McRoberts.

Following a South Williamsport touchdown, Canton answered in the 4th quarter, with a screen pass to Bailey Gardner. Fitch and Gardner’s 35-yard score sealed the win.

Troy made the trip to Wilmington, Delaware to compete in the main event game of the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic at Abessinio Stadium on the campus of Salesianum School. The Trojans capped off the event, snatching a hard fought 8-3 win over Dover High School.

Troy trailed 3-2 until late in the 2nd quarter, when Mason Smith rattled off a 54-yard touchdown run. With 1:37 to go in the game, Joseph Frye picked up a huge interception in the end zone, shutting down the Senators’ scoring drive. Dover threatened again, as the final seconds ticked away, but the Trojans came up with game-sealing pass breakup.

After an impressive showing, Troy’s Lincoln Chimics was named as the player of the game.

Troy will next host South Williamsport on Friday, September 6th at 7 p.m. The Warriors will host Athens on Saturday, September 7th at 1 p.m.
