BIG FLATS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The Elmira Corning Regional Airport will get a federal grant of just under $1 million for runway improvements.

According to Congressman Nick Langworthy’s Office, the Elmira Corning Regional Airport is going to receive a $949,577 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s FY24 Airport Improvement Program (AIP). This tax-funded grant will fund the first phase of a reconstruction and rehabilitation project for the airport’s runway and taxiway.

“The Elmira Corning Regional Airport is a vital transportation hub for our region, and this grant will ensure it continues to operate at the highest standards of safety and reliability,” said Langworthy. “I’m proud to support federal investments in our airport infrastructure to bolster the Southern Tier’s economy and connectivity.”

More than $450,000 grant awarded to the Elmira Corning Regional Airport for quality improvements

The airport’s upcoming project will see the reconstruction of existing signage and lighting that have reached the end of their useful lives on Runway 6/24. Eight thousand feet of the runway will be rehabilitated, and 570 feet of Taxiway A will be reconstructed as well.

The AIP awards grants to agencies to improve infrastructure at public-use airports. Projects that improve safety, capacity, or security or address environmental concerns are eligible to receive funding under this program. Medium and large airports get 75 to 80% of their projects funded by the grants, and smaller airports like the Elmira Corning Regional Airport receive enough money to cover 90 to 95% of project costs.
