WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. ( WETM ) — An early harvest season came in for grapes ahead of the normal maturity time. The early bloom in the spring and warm weather during the summer contributed to more crop production.

Winemaker and President of Lakewood Vineyards Chris Stamp noted that last year’s late frost reduced the crop. He says he foresees this year’s harvest season to be more sufficient.

“It looked like it was going to be close because the buds were out early, but we were fortunate enough that it didn’t quite get cold enough to damage the buds,” said Stamp. “So as spring came on, we had a bud break and a high level of viable buds, which contributed to the larger crop this year too.”

According to Stamp, this year’s crop supply is expected to replenish depleted inventories due to smaller harvests in the previous two years, ensuring adequate supply for the market. Despite the early buds, Stamp added that there was no significant late-season frost to cause any damages to the buds.

“A larger harvest will help us get our inventory back up and make sure the supplies are big enough,” said Stamp.

In addition, Stamp says they plan to make up to 110,000 gallons of wine by the end of this harvest season.
