Horseheads football working for big success

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – It’s a new era for Horseheads High School football and the Blue Raiders are battling for prominence.

A season ago, Horseheads played their way into the Section IV Class A Championship before falling to Vestal 40-14. At the end of the year, the Blue Raiders finished with a (7-4) overall record and with what they say is unfinished business.

Friday, the season officially begins for Horseheads when they travel to play out of the section vs. Watertown. The game is slated for 6:30 PM and will be played at SUNY Cortland, the home field of the 2023 NCAA D-III Champion Red Dragons. Horseheads eyes a huge win in their opener with senior quarterback Dom Cardinale leading the charge under center.

The Blue Raiders have a younger offensive line who’s looking to prove themselves this season. But, they will have to do so without last year’s Ernie Davis Football Award winner Bradock Sailsbury who graduated. Salisbury, a running back, rushed 77 times for 787 yards and 10 touchdowns. He then had 18 catches for 253 yards, three touchdowns and had a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Horseheads head coach Kevin Hillman begins his 9th overall season as the leader of the Blue Raiders and believes that this year’s team needs a stronger foundation of mental toughness. Hillman tells us that if Horseheads can overcome adversity in games more, then they are better suited to finish business on their own terms this year and beyond.
