EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — During a stop at East Syracuse Minoa High School to sign new legislation , Gov. Hochul briefly gave an update on where she stands with cell phones in school before she headed out.

Over the last few weeks, she has been traveling to schools statewide to hear firsthand from both teachers and students and more about how they are feeling about cell phones.

“I have personally received enough information for me to believe that we are going to need a ban. School districts have asked for this students have asked for this parents have asked for this and we just have to work out the mechanics of how this will happen. This will take the pressure off individual school districts,” said the governor.

Hochul still has to work with legislation on a bill which like will not happen until next year.

Here in Elmira, The Elmira City School District, specifically, Ernie Davis Academy, has rolled out a new policy banning students from having cell phones during school hours.

Students are required to lock their phones away in a Yondr pouch that they keep during the day and unlock them at the end of the day.

This practice is new to the area, with other school districts not using Yondr pouches, but instead adopting limited to zero phone use during school hours.
