ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Repair efforts on the Clemens Center Parkway Bridge are moving as expected, as confirmed by the New York State Department of Transportation.

According to NYSDOT, temporary repairs to the bridge have begun, and the northbound lanes of the bridge are expected to reopen by the end of September. But that’s not all of the repairs that the bridge will be seeing.

Clemens Center Parkway Bridge to remain closed for up to eight weeks, NYSDOT confirms

As long-term repair work on the bridge continues, drivers should be prepared for periodic and temporary lane closures.

Repairs to the bridge come after black smoke and a fire were spotted burning at a homeless encampment on the north end of the Clemens Center Bridge on July 11, which closed the bridge until it was inspected and assessed for damage to its supports.

When will the Clemens Parkway Bridge in Elmira fully reopen?

After deemed safe, the southbound lanes were reopened around 8 p.m. that same day. The northbound lanes remained closed while further investigation continued.

On July 31, NYSDOT Region 6 Director Brian Kelly stated that the bridge would remain partially closed for six to eight weeks for repairs, as it had sustained “relatively modest” damage from the fire.
