ERWIN, N.Y ( WETM ) — Two local first responders were each awarded the First Responder of the Year award for their service.

Robert J. Richards Jr. of the Caton Fire Department was honored for his 50 years of service, serving in different capacities as lieutenant, captain, EMS, and others. He mentioned it felt good to receive the award and acknowledged that many unsung heroes deserve recognition for their service.

“They put their hearts out to their community every day, and people don’t even recognize it, but I do. I see them, I love them, I thank them,” said Richards.

In addition, he noted the personal sacrifices made by first responders, inlcuding time away from their families.

Trooper Brandon Salyerds of the New York State Police was honored for his service of 17 years and involvement in the community. Trooper Salyerds who is a K-9 handler, said the highlights over the years involved going to schools, giving speeches and demonstrations, getting the youth involved, and perhaps inspiring people to consider a career in law enforcement.

“Family and friends, it takes a village to have some people to go out and be able to do this,” said Trooper Salyerds.
