BATH, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Steuben County is receiving $1.9 million in funding to support a supportive housing project in Bath, according to an announcement made by Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday.

The $1.9 million that was dedicated to Steuben County will support the development of eight units of permanent supportive housing in Bath for people with serious mental illness or substance use disorder who have experienced homelessness.

Steuben County is one of five counties in New York State to be awarded funds for permanent supportive housing projects with the $36 million announced by Governor Hochul this afternoon. This funding is provided through tax-payer-funded grants that are awarded through a competitive process by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.

This project comes after the Steuben County IDA announced that the former Dana L. Lyon School would be constructed into a new place for housing in September of 2023.

The new housing unit will include on-site laundry facilities, service office space, a management office, an exercise room, a community room, a playground and an outdoor greenspace. The property will also have commercial space that will be leased for the operation of a community arts center.

Support services for those housed in the units will be provided by Catholic Charities of Steuben/Livingston on-site and through other community organizations through linkage agreements.

Would be great if it focused on homeless LOCAL citizens ONLY and their needs (education, therapy, etc). I expect, however, that the new influx of people from south of the border will be prioritized.
