HORSEHEADS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Morning travelers on Interstate 86 were met with a fiery scene on Tuesday after a tractor-trailer crashed and caught fire, cutting off normal traffic and forcing a detour.

According to footage from the scene, around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, a semi-truck pulling a trailer collided with a guard rail at Exit 53 on I-86 eastbound in Horseheads.

Smoke and flames were visible in the darkness as the truck traveled dozens of yards away from the initial contact point before it stopped, leaving a trail of fire and a fireball on the cab.

When the sun came up the truck was still smoking and emergency crews were surrounding the scene, traffic was diverted and slowed. The truck and trailer were seen in the daylight and were heavily damaged from the fire.

Police told 18 News that the driver is alive and is being treated with non-life threatening injuries.

According to 511NY, the far right lane one of three lanes is closed. Traffic measures are in place on both sides, with westbound traffic being moved off Exit 52A, as emergency crews had to take up both the eastbound and westbound lanes.
