DIX, N.Y. ( WETM ) — The community is invited to walk around the track at Watkins Glen International while supporting a cause this weekend.

Every fall, the Alzheimer’s Association holds hundreds of walks across the country, and one of these annual walks is scheduled to take place at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, Sept. 21. Money raised at the walk will go towards Alzheimer’s research, care, and support. All of the programs and services the Alzheimer’s Association offers are free, and the money raised at the association’s walks helps make this possible.

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said Julie DeMersman, director of development for the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “We hope that everyone in the community can join us to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally end this disease.”

Registration is required for participation in the walk. There isn’t a registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to fundraise. Walkers can register on the day of the event or in advance online . People who want to support the cause but can’t participate in the walk can donate online .

On walk day, participants can enter WGI through Gate 2 and will need to sign a waiver. Registration will open at 4 p.m., the opening ceremonies will start at 5:15 p.m., and the walk itself will start at 5:30 p.m. During the opening ceremonies, walkers will carry flowers with colors that represent their personal connections to Alzheimer’s. When the walk starts, participants will have the choice to walk 2.5 miles around the whole track (minus the boot) or a shorter 1-mile path.
