    Chemung County hazardous waste collection event coming up

    CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. ( WETM ) — Chemung County residents will have the chance to get rid of old household chemicals soon.

    The Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Chemung County is holding its fall hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, Oct. 12 . This event is open to Chemung County residents only, and registration is required. Participation is free.

    The following items will be accepted:

    • Ammonia
    • Antifreeze
    • Arts and crafts supplies
    • Batteries (household types)
    • Bleach
    • Brake fluid
    • Cesspool cleaners
    • Drain cleaners
    • Driveway sealer
    • Dry cleaning fluids
    • Engine and radiator flushes
    • Floor cleaner
    • Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes
    • Gasoline
    • Herbicides
    • Insect sprays
    • Mercury/items containing mercury
    • Metal polishes
    • Mothballs
    • Muriatic acid
    • Old chemistry set supplies
    • Oven cleaners
    • Paint (latex and oil-based)
    • Paint thinners
    • Pesticides
    • Photo chemicals
    • Pool chemicals
    • Radiator cleaners
    • Rodent killers
    • Rust preventatives
    • Sealants
    • Solvents
    • Transmission fluid
    • Wood preservatives
    • Wood strippers

    Electronics, car batteries, and empty containers will not be accepted at this disposal event, and businesses are not allowed to participate. Smoking is not allowed during the event, and pets must be left at home. There isn’t a limit to how much each household can bring, but waste event participants need to describe what materials and how much of each material they plan to bring while registering.

    Chemung County residents interested in getting rid of hazardous materials at this event can register by calling the CCE at 607-734-4453 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and noon or between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Registration is open through Oct. 9.

    While registering, callers must verify that the waste they’ll bring was generated by a household and not a business. Callers will also need to give their name, phone number, and address along with how they heard about the event and if they’ve participated in a CCE disposal event before. On disposal day, each participant should write their name on a piece of paper and post it to their window or hold it up to the window as they drive through to check in.
