    Cold case: Newborn found dead inside bags remains unsolved

    NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police say they continue to investigate a 1983 cold case where a newborn was found dead inside a garbage bag along the roadway.

    According to Pennsylvania State Police, the investigation continues into the homicide of an identified newborn girl found in Northumberland County.

    Police say the gruesome discovery happened on July 18, 1983, when two Snydertown residents were walking alongside State Route 4005. A newborn girl was found “discarded along the roadway in multiple bags,” PSP reported.

    Investigators determined the victim was a full-term infant who may have been born hours before her discovery. Troopers stated the victim asphyxiated after her mouth was obstructed by a foreign object.

    State police say they have continued to follow leads and the case remains active with continued efforts into DNA analysis.
