ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Some residents in Elmira woke up to no power on Friday as NYSEG reported more than 1,600 people were in the dark, but what happened since there was no severe weather in the area?

Shelby Cohen, a spokesperson with NYSEG, told 18 News on Friday that animal contact was made with one of the electrical facilities, thus knocking out the power for several hours.

The NYSEG outage map shows that all power to the area has been restored to residents as of 11:30 a.m.

This isn’t the first time an animal caused a power outage in Elmira after a squirrel sparked a transformer at a substation downtown, cutting power to more than 800 people in March.
