ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams, was indicted on wire fraud and bribery charges after he allegedly accepted improper benefits from Turkish officials as well as other foreign business people.

This week on Empire State Weekly, Dan Mannarino, a reporter with WPIX in New York City, gave an update on Mayor Eric Adams’ indictment. He explained that Mayor Adams is the first mayor in state history to be charged with federal crimes.

He explained that while Adams has vowed to stay in office, if he were to resign or be removed by Governor Hochul, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would become mayor. A special election would take place approximately 80 days later.

Also this week, James McDonald, the Commissioner for the NYS Department of Health explained that as the seasons change, state residents should do more to protect themselves against illness. He explained COVID vaccination helps mitigate severe symptoms. He also warned against “settling” for high COVID infections.

“In the last 12 months, over 3,500 of my New York friends had a COVID-associated death. Over 73,000 had a COVID-associated hospitalization. I don’t want us to get used to those numbers. I worry that we’re settling for that,” said McDonald.

Also, Melinda Person, the President of NYSUT explained why the teacher’s union supports a prohibition of cell phone use in schools.
