M-E outlasts Waverly in overtime thriller

ENDWELL, N.Y. (WETM) – It was a game for the ages Saturday afternoon in Endwell.

In a battle of two state powers, Waverly looked to takedown Maine-Endwell on their home turf. The Wolverines, the defending New York State Class C Champions, took the Spartans to the brink but fell in overtime 42-41. M-E (4-0) is the New York State runner-up in Class B and has won two of the last three state football championships.

Both teams are the top-ranked teams in their respective classes. In a rain soaked contest, Waverly and M-E combined for a total of 83 points amid an early-season candidate for game of the year.

Saturday’s clash was a back-and-forth battle between two of the most elite programs in the entire state. Waverly (3-1) jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the second quarter courtesy of a 70-yard touchdown pass from Ben Shaw to a wide open Dalton Davis. The Wolverines then held a 20-12 lead at the half.

M-E’s Jaden Branch scored four touchdowns in the game including the game-tying score in overtime for the Spartans. In the extra session, M-E used an option play to left side of the Waverly defense and senior running back Landon Rollo scored the two-point conversion for the 42-41 win.

Waverly’s Ben Shaw continued his strong start to the season with five touchdown passes to lead the Wolverines. M-E quarterback Preston Ocker scored two touchdowns on the day for the Spartans. Below, a full scoreboard from a busy Saturday in football.
