    Corning PD K9 to receive protective vest donation from national non-profit

    CORNING, N.Y. ( WETM ) – One of the members of the Corning Police Department K9 unit is receiving a new protective vest thanks to a donation from a non-profit organization that provides assistance to law enforcement agencies across the United States.

    K9 Mikey will receive a bullet and stab protective vest to wear while on duty with the police department through a donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Vests that are provided by the organization are U.S.-made, custom-fitted and certified by the National Institute of Justice. The vest is expected to arrive within 10 weeks.

    The program is open to dogs in the U.S. who are at least 20 months old and are actively employed and certified with law enforcement or a related agency. K9s that have an expired vest are also eligible to participate. Each vest has a value of $1,800, weighs an average of four to five pounds and comes with a five-year warranty.

    Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and other related agencies throughout the U.S. Since it was established in 2009, the organization has provided over 5,760 vests to K9s in all 50 states. These donations are valued at $6.9 million, which is made possible through both private and corporate donations.
