ELMIRA, N.Y.( WETM ) – Leaves are starting to fall in the Twin Tiers region so people are going to be raking their leaves soon. Each municipality has different rules for getting rid of those leaves in your yard.

In The City of Elmira, you can rake your leaves to the curb. The city will not collect them in trash bags. This will take place from late October to early December. You can also take your yard waste to a compost site in the City Yards. It is suggested to mulch your leaves as it is beneficial to your yard.

For the Town of Elmira, it picks up only leaves, no sticks or brush, in the fall. Do not leave your leaves out more than two days before the scheduled pick-up because the leaves can blow around causing drainage issues.

In Corning, leaves are picked up in the end of October, Monday through Friday for four consecutive weeks. The schedule for that will be posted on the city website homepage under the notices tab. Leaves must be left between the curb and the sidewalk by 6 am on Monday to make sure they get picked up that week. Leaves must be free of any other materials. Do not block hydrants or storm water drains. Keep the leaves out of the roadways.

In the Village of Horseheads, leaf pickup is in November. You can put your leaves in clear or biodegradable bags and place them on the curb.

In the City of Hornell, the DPW will pick up bagged leaves left on the curb in October. Do not rake leaves, brush, grass, snow, or debris into the road. It is illegal and can block storm drains.

Leaf pickup for the Village of Watkins Glen has not been announced yet.
