(WETM) — A geomagnetic storm in space and clear skies on Thursday allowed New Yorkers to see the beauty of the Northern Lights. Viewers from around the Twin Tiers sent in photos for all to enjoy!

Thank you to all who submitted— see the magic below:

Who would have thought the Aurora Borealis would or could be seen as far south as Harris Hill, the site of the National Soaring Museum? Thursday night, October 10, 2024, The parking area that sits by an overlook that is spectacular during the daytime was packed with cars and people, as was the road leading to the museum. And “spectacular” is a good word for the light show.

It was an outstanding experience listening to the many people who were there to witness what could very well be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. One group of teenagers was taking pictures and squealing with delight each time phones were viewed to see what they had captured.

This display was made possible by a strong solar flare that entered Earth’s atmosphere and used the sun’s electrically charged ions to create a light show that people talk about and appreciate.

The Aurora Borealis is expected to be active again on Friday, October 11. Scientists say between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. is the period when viewing is best, and we were at Harris Hill a little after 10:00. It’s a light show that’s free and spectacular. Advice: any north-facing view will likely work. If you’re going to Harris Hill get there early as parking space can get taken pretty quickly.
