Bills get needed WR help, trade for Amari Cooper

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — The Bills wide receiver room got a major boost on Tuesday, as the team traded for Browns WR Amari Cooper.

The Bills are sending a 2025 third-round pick for Cooper.

The two teams are also swapping late-round draft picks, with the Bills getting a 2025 6th-round pick and giving up a 2027 7th-round pick.

Thanks to the Bills’ tight salary cap situation, Cooper was always a logical trade target. Cooper’s base salary was just $1.21 million this year and the Bills took on just $807,000 to acquire him. He will be a free agent next year. Cooper is 30 years old.

Cooper has had a prolific career, racking up more than 1,000 receiving yards six times in his career. Last year, he had 72 catches for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns.

The Browns’ offense has struggled mightily this year with Deshaun Watson behind center and Cooper has just 24 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Cleveland is 1-5 this season.

While the Bills have started the year 4-2, their “Everybody Eats” receiving room has disappointed the last two weeks. With Khalil Shakir inactive against the Texans, the team’s wide receivers caught just four passes and Josh Allen completed 9 of his 30 attempts, historically inefficient numbers.

With Shakir back in the lineup for their 23-20 win against the Jets, the offense improved but still showed that they were lacking a premier target on the outside.

Receivers caught nine passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, and 38 of those yards came on a broken play to Curtis Samuel.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott and offensive coordinator Joe Brady are scheduled to meet with the media at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Bills will host the Tennesse Titans on Sunday, October 20th at 1:00 p.m.
