    Elmira man arrested after burglary into former Southport Correctional Facility

    SOUTHPORT, N.Y. ( WETM ) — An Elmira man was arrested in October after police suspected him of breaking into the former Southport Correctional Facility and taking several items.

    Kenneth R. White III, 35, of Elmira was arrested on Saturday, Oct. 5, on the charges of burglary in the third degree, a class D felony, and criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor, a report from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office states.

    On Oct. 5, deputies investigated a possible incident on Bob Masia Drive in Southport near the Southport Correctional Facility.

    Numerous people were interviewed and items from the New York State Department of Corrections were located. Deputies learned that the facility was burglarized some of the copper was damaged and other items belonging to NYSDOCS were found.

    The release states that some master locks were damaged to gain entry into the facility.

    Following White’s arrest he was taken to the Southport Town Court before the Chemung County Jail.
