SOUTHPORT, N.Y.( WETM ) – It’s getting colder out and a lot of plants are starting to dry out and wilt away, but there’s things you can do to help flourish your garden now for next spring.

Milkweed is popping up now, at this time of year. It’s a good idea to take the pods and break them open with your fingers. Then, you can sprinkle the milkweed seeds around your garden if you want more next spring.

Plants like dahlias and other bulb plants should be dug up and brought inside. Then can be stored in a plastic bag until next spring.

For hydrangeas, the Annabelle, or the round-shaped plant, can be left alone, but the cone-shaped variant is a bit different. You should cut off the head and leave the rest of the branch. It will come back next year.

And for pumpkins, you can preserve it, but it’s better to let it out for the animals.

The Twin Tiers saw flurries earlier today

“To preserve them, you can do things like put Vaseline on them. But my thing is, they’re the perfect source of vitamin C and a lot of nutrients for the critters that are outside, including deer, the seeds in with the deer. When with the pumpkin. Actually, will work as a dewormer naturally. So, if you’ve got some old pumpkins in that just put them out in your yard, and allow them to just decompose naturally,” says Charlie Todd, the owner of Chamberlain Acres.

Mums can still see new growth. If you see the growth, you can bring your mums inside and plant it, and it can still survive the winter.
