Boomer & Gio: Don't overreact to Jets loss, but defensive performance was 'alarming'

Boomer and Gio aren’t overreacting to one Jets loss against a perennial Super Bowl contender in the 49ers, but if there was one area of sincere concern from Monday’s defeat, it was on the defensive side of the ball.

Gang Green was thoroughly overmatched and beat at the point of attack against the Niners offensive line, as backup running back Jordan Mason consistently torched New York’s run defense, leading to a lopsided loss on the road.

“This defense got sliced and diced last night,” Gio said. “Yeah, against one of the best teams in football, but the Jets are not supposed to be a bad team…they’re supposed to be one of the best teams in football, and one of the best defenses in football. That, to me, is alarming.”

The Jets defense is expected to be one of the best in football, and while they faced an offense loaded with star power on Monday, they looked anything like a top unit.

“The thing that you have to be worried about out is that defense,” Boomer said. “There was really  no pass rush when it mattered.

“But they go from Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan to Will Levis and Brian Callahan. They go down a significant level of competition this coming week when they go to Tennessee.”

The defense will indeed have a much easier assignment on Sunday, and if they settle in and get rolling after Monday’s loss, then the concerns about the defense will quickly dissipate.

“I needed to see more from this team to really get excited about them,” Gio said. “But if they rattle off three or four wins in a row, we’re not gonna be talking about this for very long.”
