Chris McMonigle won’t put too much weight into Monday’s season-opening loss by the Jets, but if there is one particular area of concern, he would point to Robert Saleh, who he says didn’t seem to have the defense ready for the 49ers’ star-studded offense.

“I still think it’s a top defense in the league, but they got embarrassed. This run defense didn’t show up,” C-Mac said.

“Checklist number one on the concerns of Jets fans has to be the head coach. The defense is his. That’s his baby…and this defense wasn’t ready to play.”

The defense was gashed for over 400 yards, including 147 yards on the ground by Jordan Mason, who got the start for injured star Christian McAffrey. C-Mac expects better moving forward, but he wants to see the head coach have what is supposed to be his top unit be more prepared than it was on Monday in San Francisco.

“I still believe this defense can be a top defense in this league. Maybe not top two or three or five, but championship caliber,” C-Mac said. “Well, they showed you none of that last night. Championship caliber defenses don’t give up 400 yards. Super Bowl caliber defenses don’t give up points on eight straight drives.

“This defense has to be better, and this coach has to be better at preparing them for that quality of opponent.”
