Evan: No need to panic about Jets, but it's okay to be 'pissed off' at Week 1 performance

Evan Roberts isn’t slamming the panic button on the Jets season after a blowout loss to the dynamic 49ers on Monday night. In fact, he isn’t even lifting the glass case over that panic button.

But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t livid watching Gang Green’s supposedly elite defense get shredded by Jordan Mason and company, while Christian McAffrey sat on the sideline in street clothes.

“I am not worried about the Jets’ season. I am not overreacting to Week 1...but, I’m pissed, and that’s OK,” Evan said. “It’s okay to spend three hours on a Monday night watching what you thought was the strength of your team - the defense - absolutely stink for three hours. And it’s okay after the game to be mad. It’s okay to complain that Ashtyn Davis still sucks. It’s okay to be mad after watching the defense give up points on eight straight possessions.

“It’s okay to be mad and annoyed that we barely got to see Aaron Rodgers play football because the defense couldn’t get off the field.”

The Niners racked up over 400 yards of total offense, while Mason ran for 147 yards as San Francisco won at the point of attack seemingly every snap of the evening. The Jets defense had no answer for the 49ers’ embarrassment of weapons on offense, giving Gang Green a harsh lesson in what it will take to be a true Super Bowl contender. Monday’s loss didn’t leave Evan convinced that they can’t get to that level by the end of the season, but it did leave him temporarily furious to wait months, even a year in the case of Aaron Rodgers, for Jets football to return, only to watch their return quickly turn into a non-competitive beatdown.

“I’m not worried that this season is gonna end 4-13. I’m not worried that it’s the same old Jets,” Evan said. “But I was pissed last night, and I’m pissed today. Why? Because there are only 17 of these. Why? Because I’m delusional enough to believe that this team can compete with the 49ers.

“There’s only 17 games. They’re like holidays. Last night was Christmas, and it got ruined. It was a disaster.”
