Boomer: Cut Daniel Jones some slack after Week 1 disaster

Daniel Jones has been the face of Giants fans’ frustrations since the team’s blowout loss at home to the Vikings in Sunday’s season opener, highlighted by video of fans heckling the quarterback on his way out of the stadium long after the game went final.

Boomer criticized Jones’ decision making after the game, and warned that his time as Big Blue’s starting quarterback could soon be over if he doesn’t clean up those mental mistakes, but he added that there needs to be some perspective when evaluating his nightmare Week 1 performance.

“Does anyone want to give any credence to the fact that he is coming back from an ACL surgery earlier than normal, and is playing with a number of guys who are also playing together for the first time on that offensive line?” Boomer said. “He is still a captain, he is a leader of the team...he had a bad game. I don’t necessarily know if the offensive line had a good game. They weren’t able to run the ball effectively against Minnesota.”

Jones threw two bad interceptions and posted a quarterback rating of 44.3, hardly the reintroduction he was looking for after a rough season ended early with an ACL tear in 2023. He heard loud boos throughout the afternoon, and many are already calling for him to be replaced by Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito. But Boomer says there is still a chance that Jones could improve as he gains more confidence in his surgically-repaired knee and grows more familiar with the new teammates around him.

“I don’t want to throw total cold water on the situation,” Boomer said. “I want to give him a chance to see if he can find something.”
