Morash rips Brian Daboll's 'inexcusable' handling of Graham Gano, Giants 'inept' defense

Shaun Morash went on the air immediately following the Giants’ heartbreaking loss to the Commanders on Sunday afternoon, and he went off on the aspects of the game that doomed Big Blue, starting with how the head coach handled Graham Gano and his groin injury entering Sunday.

“It just had a negative feel because of Brian Daboll’s inexcusable approach to the kicker situation,” Morash said. “Last season, the Giants dealt with Graham Gano groin injuries earlier in the year, and basically, Brian Daboll kept saying he trusted him, and Gano kept missing kicks…to have that situation last season…and then the Giants enter this season and decide to keep a young kicker on the practice squad…if you knew Graham Gano’s groin was hurt yesterday, how could you - how dare you - not use one of your three practice squad elevations…on a second kicker for one week?

“It is so easy, a caveman could do it. And yet Brian Daboll…doesn’t think this is a problem?”

Gano, entering the game with a pre-existing groin injury, wound up injuring his hamstring on the opening kickoff, forcing the Giants to try for two the rest of the way after punter Jamie Gillan missed a PAT try.

The kicker position wasn’t the only area of criticism for Giants fans after Sunday’s loss, as Morash also went off on the defense, which allowed a dizzying amount of field goals, including one as time expired to seal the win for Washington.

“The defense, led by Shane Bowen, is completely inept!” Morash said. “How could you let Brian Robinson run for basically 700 yards in a game? How could the defense pull this off today? How could they top themselves off last week with Sam Darnold completing 700 passes in a row?

“They lost today because this defense - get this - sucks!”

The Commanders didn’t punt the entire game, and the Giants defense struggled to get off the field all afternoon, the second time in as many weeks that the defensive unit was thoroughly outplayed in year one without defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

“This stinks, but I’m kind of apathetic towards it…this loss may end up being a win for the franchise long term,” Morash said. “But it’s inexcusable that a defense could look like that with Shane Bowen handling it.
How could they miss so many tackles?”
