Keith: Clay Holmes would be 'waste of a roster spot' for Yankees in playoffs

Luke Weaver looks the part as the Yankees closer, and Keith McPherson hopes to see the righty remain in that role the rest of the way, even as Aaron Boone says the closer situation will be “fluid.”

“Weaver has been electric,” Keith said. “I think he has the personality and the temperament for it. He’s been solid. He’s my guy. Right now, he’s the guy until he’s not. Even if he blows a save, he’s still the guy.”

If the situation is fluid, there is one stance that Keith wants the Yanks to be solid on, and that is Clay Holmes not getting the chance to be the closer again. In fact, if Keith were Boone, he would leave Holmes off the playoff roster entirely, though he is resigned to the idea that Holmes will get the ball in big spots come October.

“You know they’re going to. They view him as a high-leverage reliever,” Keith said. “We don’t, but they still think they can use him in spots.

“I expect him to be there. But that’s a waste of a roster spot, in my opinion.”

Keith would give the spot to nearly anybody else at this point, including youngster Clayton Beeter, an exicting pitching prospect brought over in the Joey Gallo trade who is finally fully healthy this season.

“I’m down for it. Run it. Let’s see it,” Keith said. “The kid started the season with the Yankees before he got hurt. Let’s see it. I want as many options as possible.”
