This gem is a historic mansion in Bartow with a unique look

BARTOW, Fla. (WFLA) — This historic mansion in Polk County is said to be a tribute to a man who constructed the home without any blueprints.

The Wonder House was considered a popular tourist destination and attraction from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The four-story gem was built by Conrad Schuck, from Pennsylvania, in 1926.

“People come in and appreciate a little bit of history and see a little bit about the architecture around the house. I think that’s the coolest aspect,” Wonder House Manager Krislin Kreis said.

The home is now used as a private residence by Kreis, who offers tours to visitors when her schedule allows.

“My intention is to be able to do tours, to share the house with people, to share the story of Conrad and his family, to see the architecture and engineering that he was able to put into a home,” she explained.

Some of the unique features added by Schuck were laundry systems and air conditioning.

“A twenty-one square foot lazy Susan kitchen cabinet, wall panels that you could switch out in the ceilings,” Kreis added.

Kreis said she is working on renovating and restoring some of the rooms and the moat that is outside.

“It’s very special that we’re able to preserve a piece of our history here in Polk County,”

The Wonder House offers guided tours that last about an hour and a half.
