TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in connection to a fatal stabbing in Brandon on Aug. 12.

John Aylor, 37, was arrested for the stabbing of his 64-year-old mother, Julie Aylor, off Marjorie Avenue in Brandon, according to the HCSO.

The sheriff’s office said deputies received a call from a concerned citizen about John Aylor’s location after seeing his picture on the news. Around 4 a.m., Aylor was taken into custody without incident.

“Today, we have taken a significant step toward justice with the arrest of the individual responsible for the tragic and violent stabbing that took the life of an innocent woman,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

Aylor was charged with armed burglary of a dwelling with assault or battery and murder in the first degree while engaged in burglary, according to HCSO.

Chronister said he broke into his mom’s house through the dog door on Monday morning, intending to steal from her, but the two got into an argument instead, and he stabbed her with a knife in the chest.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family during this challenging time. We remain committed to ensuring that those who commit such heinous acts are held accountable,” Chronister said.

According to investigators, Aylor has a criminal history dating back to 2003 with the sheriff’s office. He has been arrested at least 24 times for various crimes like stealing and drugs, but this was the first time he was violent.

“This is our 14th family related homicide this year already,” Chronister said. “We had 16 for the entire year last year.”

The sheriff said his team knows how to reduce crimes like drugs and gangs, but not domestic crimes.

“Family violence is a silent crime,” Chronister explained. “There is no blueprint.”

He encouraged domestic violence victims to speak out.
