POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man is dead after he collided nearly head-on with another driver on a Polk County highway on Tuesday evening.

Around 7:31 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol said a 49-year-old Clermont man, traveling southbound on State Road 33, attempted to pass slower traffic by moving into the northbound lanes near the intersection of Voyles Loop Road.

FHP said as the Clermont man tried to pass, he collided with a 31-year-old Lake Alred man who was driving north on SR-33 in a tractor-trailer nearly head-on.

The driver of the tractor-trailer struck a utility pole and guide wires but was not injured.

However, officials said the Clermont man died at the scene of the crash.
