TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man and woman have been charged after a child was hospitalized with “significant internal injuries,” according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Roseshana Smith, 23, of Pinellas Park, and Jordan Gatlin, 26, of St. Petersburg, were arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse, police said.

A 2-year-old child, who was in their care, was taken to a hospital Thursday with “significant internal injuries and multiple scars in various stages of healing,” according to police.

It was also discovered that an 8-month-old child was also neglected, police said.

Gatlin allegedly used a deadly weapon to batter the 2-year-old and Smith allegedly failed to protect the 8-month-old from abuse, according to an arrest affidavit.

Police said no further details would be released in order to protect the identity of the children.
