SPRING HILL, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is trying to determine what led up to a shooting at a Spring Hill apartment complex on Sunday night .

In the meantime, neighbors like Daniel Mayle are getting frustrated with the violence where they live.

“It’s just getting worse around here,” Mayle said.

The shooting occurred at the Mariner’s Cay Apartments around 7:40 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

“I put my kid down at about 7:39 p.m. and I went to go lay down in bed and I heard gunshots, about five or six of them,” Mayle said.

Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said the shooting began when a vehicle carrying five people came across the suspect, who began shooting at them. The victims sped away from the complex to get help.

Mayle said he noticed new skid marks on the road and a knocked-down stop sign.

After the victims fled the apartment complex, they ended up at the Publix in the Mariner Commons Shopping Center. The sheriff said the shooting originally came in as a possible active shooter; however, he believes that was the result of some victims running into Publix to receive help.

“It originally came out as a possible active shooter or active assailant and I think that was the result of some victims running into Publix behind us here,” Al Nienhuis said.

The sheriff said Sunday that he believed there was only one shooter and that deputies had taken the suspect into custody.

“The suspect, he was a young Black kid, getting arrested, pulled out, put in the back of the car, and then that was when I went back upstairs to go relax and try to go back to bed,” Mayle said.

Nienhuis said three people were taken to the hospital following the scare at Publix. Reports later came out that two more persons of interest had been arrested in connection to the shooting.

The identities of the suspects and victims have yet to be released.

“It’s pretty concerning,” Mayle said. “I don’t let my kids go outside and play. We take them to my parent’s house to play, the YMCA, and other places around here just not really outside.”

Mayle said he’s lived in the apartments for three years and within the last year, crime has become a much bigger concern.

I live close to these apts and I will say Mariner Cay has become very bad !! It’s sad to see such nice apts go to hell !! I blame the management and corporation to allow such poor quality of tenants to reside there !! The county needs to step in and revamp the whole structure of people that are ruining it for many others !!!
