Hillsborough County education leaders address lack of high school diplomas

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County School District leaders are hosting a community meeting to discuss the lack of high school diplomas and their efforts to mitigate the issue.

The Hillsborough County 509 will host a community meeting and panel to discuss this topic.

A certificate of completions is not the same as a diploma. In fact, it prevents students from getting certain jobs or even enrolling in the military.

The panel will discuss ways they are working to ensure students receive diplomas rather than certificates of completion.

The panel will have the following leaders:

• Gary Brady – Region Superintendent of High Schools
• Robert Nelson – Region Superintendent High Schools
• Christina Raburn – Executive Director of High Schools
• Michelle Loango – Director of Adult Education
• Ross Anderson – Education Advocate Liaison
• Henry “Shake” Washington – School Board Member, District 5

The meeting begins at 5:15 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m. It will take place at the Greater Bethel M.B. Church on Jefferson Street in Tampa. WFLA’s Deanne King will be moderating the panel.
