TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Publix Super Markets has made PEOPLE Magazine’s list of top 100 “Companies That Care in 2024.”
According to PEOPLE , the Lakeland-originated grocery giant made the list because of the company’s care for its employees and the communities, especially in times of need.
“We’re honored to be recognized as a company focused on taking care of others,” Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous said on Wednesday. “Our founder, George Jenkins, believed in the importance of being there for both his associates and the community. More than 90 years later, we’re honored to continue his legacy of service.”
The magazine highlighted a Fort Myers Beach location, following the devastation of Hurricane Ian in 2022. When the store reopened in May 2023, Publix handed out 300 care packages to customers and provided boxed lunches to residents and construction crews whose homes were damaged during the hurricane.
‘The Blockbuster Experience’ coming to Tampa Bay Comic Convention Publix also donated $5,000 worth of food, hygiene items, paper products, and gift cards to a local church to help those still facing the effects of the storm, PEOPLE said.
“At Publix, we remain committed to standing side-by-side with residents and our associates as the community rebuilds,” a Publix media relations manager at the time told PEOPLE. “We are honored and privileged to serve our customers and welcome them back to their Publix store.”
Every year, the magazine collaborates with “Great Place to Work” to compile a list of 100 companies that go the extra mile for their communities.
Among the top five on their list for 2024 were Cisco, Hilton, The Wonderful Company, Marriott International, and Veterans United Home Loans, respectively.

BayCare was highlighted for its determination to provide not-for-profit healthcare in the Tampa Bay community across 16 hospital and ambulatory and physician services.
According to PEOPLE, when the company sends patients home, they always ask if they have enough food at home, and will provide food-insure individuals with “healing bags”— packed with several days’ worth of nonperishable items.
“We strive to bridge the gap between hunger and health, treating food insecurity as we would any other barrier to well-being,” Lisa Bell, BayCare’s director of Community Benefit, told PEOPLE. “By addressing this fundamental need, we are not only nourishing bodies but also fostering stronger, healthier communities.”
